Our Kelowna couples counsellors work from the two approaches with the strongest research base in relationship therapy — and blend them to fit your relationship rather than forcing one model on every couple.
Both are structured forms of couples therapy with decades of outcome research behind them, and your counsellor draws on whichever elements best fit the two of you.
The Gottman Method
Built on more than forty years of research observing thousands of real couples, the Gottman Method gives you concrete, skill-based work on friendship, conflict management, intimacy and shared meaning. It’s structured and practical — you’ll leave sessions with specific things to try, not just insight.
In practice, Gottman-informed sessions are structured and hands-on. Your counsellor helps you strengthen your friendship and your “love maps” — how well you each know the other’s inner world — while learning to catch the four patterns research links most strongly to relationship breakdown: criticism, contempt, defensiveness and stonewalling. You’ll practise noticing and accepting repair attempts during conflict, so disagreements stop spiralling and start resolving. Structured assessments help pinpoint exactly where your relationship is strong and where it needs support, so the work is tailored to the two of you rather than one-size-fits-all. Many Kelowna couples tell us this approach feels practical and hopeful from the very first session.
Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)
EFT is the gold-standard, research-validated approach for couples. Rather than arguing about the surface issue, EFT helps you identify the emotional cycle you keep getting trapped in — pursue and withdraw, criticise and shut down — and rebuild secure emotional connection underneath it.
Most couples aren’t really fighting about dishes or schedules — underneath, each partner is asking, “Are you there for me? Do I matter to you?” EFT helps you map the negative cycle the two of you get pulled into, understand the softer emotions hiding beneath anger or withdrawal, and learn to reach for each other in ways that build safety and closeness. If you’ve ever felt like you’re having the same fight on repeat, this is the approach designed for exactly that pattern — and most couples who complete EFT experience meaningful, lasting improvement in their connection.
Premarital counselling
Getting married is the best possible time to learn how you’ll handle conflict, money, in-laws, intimacy and expectations — before those conversations get expensive. Premarital counselling in Kelowna usually runs four to six sessions.
Together with your counsellor, you’ll work through the conversations many couples avoid until they become conflicts: how you’ll handle money and financial decisions, expectations around family and in-law boundaries, how each of you approaches conflict and repair, intimacy, faith and values, and what a shared future looks like day to day. You’ll also learn each other’s communication styles and practise tools you’ll use for years. Couples often tell us these premarital sessions were some of the most meaningful conversations they’d ever had — and that they walked into marriage feeling like a genuine team.
Affair recovery and rebuilding trust
Infidelity doesn’t have to end a relationship, but recovering from it is structured work, not just time. We help Kelowna couples move through the disclosure phase, understand what made the relationship vulnerable, and rebuild trust deliberately.
Affair recovery moves at your pace through distinct stages: first creating enough safety and stability to function day to day, then understanding how the affair happened without excusing it, and finally rebuilding trust and a new vision for the relationship. Your counsellor holds space for both partners — the hurt and the anger, as well as the guilt and shame — without judgement or taking sides. Many couples find that a mix of joint and individual sessions helps each partner process what they’re carrying. With honest work, many relationships come through infidelity stronger and more open than they were before.
Separation, divorce and discernment counselling
When one partner is leaning out and the other is leaning in, discernment counselling helps you decide whether to work on the relationship before committing to the work — and if you do separate, we help you do it with less damage, especially where children are involved.
If you do choose to separate, counselling can help you do it with dignity: communicating respectfully, grieving what’s ending, and — if you have children — building a co-parenting relationship that shields them from adult conflict. Ending a relationship well is its own kind of success, and it shapes how both of you move forward. Whatever you decide, you won’t have to navigate the decision alone.
